Do I need new steering rack? 200 1980

My local dealer says I need to replace the steering rack & ball joints on my '80 242DL w/manual steering. It's the original rack but has only 157K miles. But over the 9 yrs. I've had it it's been driven over a lot of cobblestone streets. I'm getting a lot of bad noises & bangs when going over rough spots but smooth as glass on good roads. Replaced struts not too long ago.

My indie says the trouble must be in the steering; ball joints don't make noises. Any ideas as to where I can get a new steering rack & tie rods ends for a non-PS system? I'm the 2nd owner & this one's a keeper to me. Thanks a lot.
