Valve cover / rear cam seal 200

I have a 1991 240 non-turbo. Recently had it squirting oil out the back of the valve cover area horizontally on to the fire wall.
I bought a new valve cover gasket and cam seal and flame trap - just did the flame trap.
Question is: do the rear cam seals ever go bad / are they servicable with the engine in the car?
Also, when replacing the valve cover gasket should I use a small bead or RTV to help seal?
