Overheating, or is it?! 1988

Hey Everyone! I'm having overheating issues with my 1988 240 dl... My mechanic said there is nothing wrong, but the other day I was stopped at a train and it crept up to red.. it instantly killed the car. I put in park, started it.. It started right away and the thermostat stayed at the halfway point. It randomly gets to the red, but seems to slowly creeping down. Did it today and I cranked the heater on full blast ( perfect for 95° day in Florida) and it went back down to half way. Any suggestions, I'm all ears... Thanks!
