damaged cps 900 1994

I have a 1994 940 volvo (Bosch LH 2.4) nonturbo with 140000 miles. It stopped on the road. I pulled the cps. The cps on top of the bellhousing was grooved across the top with a grooved, bent pickup. I replaced the cps with a new volvo one but it still would not start. What are the possible causes for the damaged cps? I opened the small inspection plate and manually rotated the crankshaft. I could not see any defects in the "tone ring". The cps holding plate is not cracked or does not look damaged. Please advise.
