Default Looking to buy a '90 740 turbo wagon with limited car knowledge 700 1990

Hi everyone,

I've always wanted a 740 wagon and have found one for sale through a mutual friend for extremely cheap ($500). However, I have a very limited knowledge of car mechanics and would like some input before I make a final decision (this will be my first Volvo).

Here's the situation: it's a 1990 740 turbo intercooler wagon with 225k. It burns oil and leaks a small amount of coolant. The owner "tops it off" every week or so and doesn't have any issues as long as it is monitored. It has no rust and the body is in decent shape. Last year the original owner moved and drove it coast to coast without any problems (I'm in the US). That owner then sold it to the current owner, who has driven it locally for the past year.

So, any red flags? What should I look out for and what are some known issues with this particular model to be vigilant of? I am looking to learn and would appreciate some suggestions.

Thanks.
