Late Model 240 R134a A/C System in a 1974 164E 140-160

Can a late model 240 R134a A/C System be installed in a 1974 164E?
The car has an R12 A/C system. The clutch spins when I turn on the A/C. It does not immediately start to cycle on/off but I never left it running long enough to witness any long term behavior. It has never worked since I have owned the car. No cold air. It probably has a leak.
I thought about having the system tested for leaks, repaired and filled with R12 or converted to R134a but it is obviously pretty old and I think I would rather transplant all new 240 A/C components from the ducts forward and go with a more modern system if possible.
Has anyone heard of or done this before?
