Hi Dave,
I'm a lot more confident now your odometer will function again after fitting the new gear from Newport News. I spoke to Jeff many years ago regarding replacement instructions; I think I should have done some more for him.
Somewhere along the line I found another gear maker, very close to me geography-wise. He advertised on ebay, gears machined from Delrin, so I gave them a try. It was less than half the price at the time, too, shipped economically in a first class envelope. I've bought 3 or 4 from him.
I found both gears to be accurate and well-made, and they still do the job today, not that any of us have the kind of time or mileage the original VDO gears gave us before they turned to mush. When I saw the photos carver posted, I could not imagine this being anything but a sorry mistake. Thanks for the pics and confirmation this wasn't a one-off defect. Today, a search on ebay yields too many results to read, whereas 12 years ago we couldn't find gears.
