If your son's car were a 240, I'd suggest making sure the codes (plural) were indeed clear and the light was indeed the check engine light and not the service light.

If verified this is the case, I'd either separate the sources of the CEL that are tied together (ignition CU and fuel CU) to see which is setting it, or swap in a spare of one or the other, whichever was more expedient.

However, I know too little about the 700 to say this would be the best approach on your son's car.
