engine side face of crank gear has a notch but nothing to key into it? 200 1988

In process of disassembly for timing belt and oil seal replacement.

When the crank gear and back washer come off I can see a notch on the inside of the washer and a mated indentation in the back of the gear. The notch is rounded on the closed side and the indentation matches it. The front washer indentation is squared off as is the numb that fits into it.

I do not feel anything on the crankshaft that would key into these back side notches. I suppose once the gear is tightened it holds the washer in place but there is no assurance the notch and indentation line up.

Does anyone know what the notch and indentation are for?
Did something fall out?
