Rebuild PV 544 jack 444-544 1962

Now starting into the 6th year of the restoration, and nearly done--except that I have only a disassembled jack in need of cleaning and painting. How does one remove the upper end cap, the casting that the crank turns in? It appears to be clipped in and since it takes only compression load it seems that it shouldn't need more than a token effort to keep it in place--but it's NOT coming off...

Many thanks from Al!
