Fuel gauge issue 200 1985

Recently, my gas gauge drops to extreme empty then a few minutes later I'll look down and it's back to it's correct position. It will do this if it's full or not. If I give the dash a good smack or thump the plastic window on the face of the cluster on the gauge side, it'll come back up. I've replaced the sending unit last year. Would reseating or replacing the actual gauge correct the problem? Any suggestions or direction would be helpful.
