hatch latch 700 1989

the latch on the rear hatch (sounds like a Dr. Seuss line) has occasionally quit working and a bit of lube spray here and there got it working again. I can always open it from inside but not with the outside level anymore. Can't seem to determine where to begin to troubleshoot this one.
