Windshield wiper CAMs and connecting wires... 200 1990

So my son and I are working on his 1990 245.

We remove the entire wiper assembly, re-grease everything and then re-install it.

Everything was working great, or so I thought before we re-installed the dash.

He pulls the car out of the garage last night and runs the wipers once. They cycle once then stop.

I don't believe him, so he shows me and sure enough, I can hear the motor running, but no one's home in the wiper stalks.

I pull the glove box and I notice that the wire has come undone on the CAM connecting the drive metal from the motor. WTF???

So I may have to pull the dash again to fix this, but my real question is HOW did this happen and why, and how do I make sure it doesn't happen again?

As always, thanks in advance,

Matt
