Brake line fittings 140-160 1973

Each front caliper has 3 bleed nipples. Are you getting no fluid out of any of the nipples on the left front wheel? Are you getting fluid out of all three of the bleed nipples on the right side? If so, that is strange.

I think this is correct. The top nipple on each front caliper and the rear left caliper are all on the secondary brake circuit. The outer and inner nipples on each front calipers and the rear right caliper are on the primary brake circuit.

If you are getting fluid out of all three of the nipples on the right side, it seems like both sections of the master cylinder are doing something. Since you are already into bleeding the system, I would be inclined to:

first - after cleaning around them so dirt does not fall into the port, completely remove the bleed screws on the left front caliper to see if you get any flow out the ports. Sometimes these can get jammed up.

second, if removal of the bleed screws does not result in fluid flow, pull both flex lines to the left caliper and pump / pressurize the MC to see if you get fluid flow. If there is no fluid flow, remove the flex lines at the coupling to the hard line and check for flow. I am not aware that it occurs on 140s; but, I know that on some of the other vintage Volvos the rubber flex lines can swell up with age restricting fluid flow.

Follow the same procedure to source the location of the blockage for the rear left calipers. The flex line is between the brake valve mounted on the body in front of the back axle and a fitting right on the back axle.

If you find that you have a couple of plugged flex lines, I would suck it up and replace all the flex lines.

If the car has been immobile for a long time, the calipers can gum up pretty good. If they are so gummed up that fluid does not flow out the ports, then you need to pop the pistons out of the calipers and do a soak in brake cleaner. PS - do not separate the caliper halves for cleaning. The service manual is very specific about not doing that. If you are at that point you might want to consider getting a reman caliper from Rock Auto or whoever.
