I first must emphasize this is not an overdrive problem. It is a gearbox problem.

It has been nearly two years since I parked the 242 due to what I believe is a problem with the M46 transmission. Yes, I know, I am a terrible Volvo owner for letting this go for so long. Anyway, the time has come to get this car back on the road.

I first described the ugly noise I was hearing in this thread:

Now, the only real way to find out what's going on is to drop the gearbox and open it up.

But, assuming it is a bad bearing, which one? I hear the noise in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and reverse gears but not in 4th gear. This leads me to believe it is one of the bearings for the intermediate shaft. Am I thinking correctly?

I ask because in the Turbobricks thread pointed out by kgv in response to my original thread, the symptoms are exactly what I describe. Yet the responses want to think it is the mainshaft center bearing, which further confuses me because I only see two bearings for the mainshaft.

I welcome your input.
