If I remember correctly my brand-new '65 544 had a vinyl covered welting. I'm not sure the solid type had even been invented yet. I made some for a Morris Minor I restored a few years back, by wrapping a strip of vinyl around some 3/16" cord, and sewing with outdoor thread. I sealed the ends with a little silicone after installing. I do it the same way when I make seat upholstery.
