Will any AW71L transmissions accept a mechanical speedometer?

Hi everybody,

I'd like to put an AW71L into a car that has a mechanical speedometer.

I've heard that if you have an AW7x transmission without a connection for a mechanical speedometer you can swap over a tailhousing from an earlier (1985 or earlier?) transmission. However, I've also heard that this swap won't work on a 1993 or later AW7x transmission because the tailhousings were updated with roller bearings instead of bushings, and the speedometer gears won't fit on 1993 or newer transmissions.

So, my question is, when was the AW71L transmission introduced? If there aren't any 1992 or earlier AW71L transmissions out there, I'll have to look in to other options. Also, is there a way I can visually tell if the transmission I'm looking at will be able to accept a tailhousing with a mechanical speedometer drive?

Thanks!
