The last alternator that I replaced, a few years ago, was $30 at the pick and pull.

They last 200K or more.

Unless your car has more than 150K, it probably needs new brushes. A mechanic that repairs Volvos should know how to check them.

You need to find a Volvo shop. I do not know where you are, but in some areas there are many indie shops.
