dimmer switch woes 200 1982

Hi Bob,

There is a way to use the newer switch, but it is to modify the circuit with a headlight relay such as was implemented in the 86- cars. I vaguely recall needing to do this on my 84 the night before leaving on a long trip. Not hard for me, because I have a good supply of wiring stuff and relays in the junk box, but perhaps not geared to a tutorial sort of project. If anyone has one, it would be Dave Barton.

Next time I had one of the old switches die, six years ago, it came flying apart just as I switched off the lights (in the '79) pulling in the driveway. What luck. I even found all the pieces.



The tricky part is re-staking the pot metal housing to retain the bakelite contact plate. Sorry for the delay; I couldn't recall what I did with the photos. Found 'em. Here's a gallery of pix:
