Futzed with this in 740 and 940 non-Turbo in junkyards.
I've seen the thermostat in 700 and 900. The Volvo 700-900 Series FAQ makes poor mention of it here, yet no mention how to replace, yet mentions what happens to the AMM / MAF in short order with all hot air all the time:

The air box thermostat collapses when forced. IIRC (if I recall correctly), with care, you push down on the brass-color housing at the top or the edge at the silver-color plunger end. You collpase the silver small silver plunger so the brass body slide out the series of aligned holes. You may have to twist (a small oil dab may help) the brass housing as brass can corrode and get stuck in the series of holes that secure the thermostat brass body.
I've looked at Tasca Volvo Parts. FCP Euro, and iPd. No air box thermostat. I know Turbo does not have the air box thermostat assembly in the air filter box. Yet yours in not turbo.

Don't damage the housing, or at least get the part numbers from the brass body. I'll guess you have replacement already.
I see iPd USA removed other images of the air filter box thermostat. Hmmm.
Not sure if this is meant for 940. Fits 240.
If after market, replace every so often, I've read.
If in northern climes like Finland or maybe upstate New York, you want the warmed air blending feature to work for reduced emission and shortened warm-up time, and wear. If in warm climes, delete the preheater accordion hose between exhaust manifold and air filter box inlet, remove, don't discard, the air filter box thermostat assembly. Remove gently. Check with your state emissions laws. Like you would not want to remove the accordion hose between exhaust manifold and air filter box inlet in CA-state as the state inspects the emissions devices.
On all my 240s, both the normal ambient air and what was the heated air intake are open to ambient air. MO-state does not inspect emissions controls.
