Quick story: Since you don’t know the service history of the PCV system, I suggest checking out the condition of the flame trap hoses as well as the flame trap and breather box. My 90 240 had a clog in its PCV system that was difficult to track down. The rear main seal had begun leaking and I suspected a clogged PCV. I cleaned the breather box and replaced the flame trap/screen but the leak continued...:( Then I replaced the small hose (clogged) from the flame trap to the intake manifold and voila, amazingly the leak dried up! Cost me 78 cents...:)
