Rear axle shaft 120-130

Hi Planetman:

Yesterday after a few days worth of driving around, I jacked up the rear to inspect how I did with installing the replacement shaft (on the passenger side). I noticed that there was a slight freeplay when I pushed and pulled the top and bottom of the tire. Only very slightly.

The freeplay was not there after I put everything together after installation, so I was wondering if the bearings had settled in a bit into the race cup while I was driving around. Should I take off the wheel assembly to tap in the race more securely against the bearing and add one more paper-thin shim?

I read that overtightening the race against the bearings can cause damage as well as the opposite. Is that slight freeplay considered unsatisfactory?

Any advice appreciated. Thanks!!

-DS
