240 EGR Leave alone or remove 200 1989

I just got an 89 245. It was a CA car and has an EGR system on it.

The only experience I have with EGRs is on VW TDIs where they do a great job clogging the intake manifolds with carbon.
Are there unintended long term problems with the EGR systems on the redblocks?
Does it do anything to help fuel economy?
