Driver's Door Lock 900 1994

My daughter discovered a problem with the driver's door lock (the manual lock inside). If the door lock is down about half way and the door shut, pushing in the driver's door handle will actuate the locking mechanism pulling the lock down all the way and if the key is in the ignition, you will be locked out. I thought this was a problem on her car only and tried to find out if her car was the only one with this problem. I tried it on my low mileage 95 940 and the same thing happened.
Has anyone else experienced this problem and is there a fix? My daughter's car lock works very easy compared to my low mileage 95 which has a more definite "up" or "down" position.
Is there any way to make the lock position more definite or does the lock mechanism need replacing? If it needs replacing, how do I remove the black plastic cover over the assembly?
