Now what?! 200

I need some help with this one. The 89 I recently purchased has been running fine. Was doing maintenance on it. Had just started it with no problem. Hit the key again and it spun like the timing belt had broken. Belt was good, but replaced anyway since I don’t know when it was last done. Same problem. Engine spins so fast you’d swear the belt broke or every cylinder had lost compression. Which I need to get a compression gauge and check. Thought about the starter bendix not engaging, but the engine rocks when you engage the ignition. Any thoughts? Due to work schedule I haven’t been able to check anything else. One of y’all had to experience this, right?
