the reason it's ramping up in Europe is because IT IS MANDATED by the EU(European Union) -- those un-elected -- making up rules in Brussels..."for the greater good".
On of the big complaints about super fuel efficient and hybrid "commuter cars", from State and Local Governments in my area -- Pa, Md, NoVa, DC, was/is that Roads are funded thru GasTaxes. Less/no gas purchases, reduced funding for local and state road repair/renewal.
One of the potential solutions is to charge a per mile fee to the drivers os these vehicles. Well how do you do that? It's called Track & Tax and uses the OnBoard computer navagation sytem in all these 'Green Vehicles' to log miles...Then you will get a Taxed.
And maybe if you fail to pay, your EV gets ShutDown, can't get to work. Simple solution because if you didn't have money to buy gas you cuouldn't get to work under the ICE system of transportation. (Internal Combustion Engine - ICE)
Mandated by Law --- is what you need to keep in mind going forward. The people vying for the WhiteHouse in one party, want to Force the change. EV Good ICE Bad.
Historic antique Volvos are a ticket to avoid this.
