failing fuel pessure regulator ? 200 1992

My '92 245 is hard to start. It cranks fine and kind of tries but won't run unless I open the throttle about half way. After that it runs fine. Starting is still a little off but when it is warm it starts without any help.

I have a fuel pressure gauge with an adapter for the schrader valve that Volvo thoughtfully installed in the fuel line. Unfortunately they put it under the fuel rail just about exactly in line with an intake manifold stud. I can not bend the line from the gauge short enough to get it on the fitting.

The vacuum line is not wet but does smell a little like fuel. I'm pretty sure I need a new FPR. The part is ~$175 so I'm reluctant to do a lot of trouble shooting by parts replacement. Twisting the rail looks like it will certainly snap off the front injectors. Any ideas on how to get the gauge connected ?

Thanks

Greg
