Temp and fuel gauge go to max with engine running 200

On a short trip yesterday, I glanced down at the temp and fuel gauge and noticed temp almost in the red and fuel at max. Turned off engine and gauges appeared to read properly in key position II (power to instrument cluster). Started engine and checked voltage at battery - reading about 13.5 Volts, so not overcharging but gauges went back up.

Voltage stabilizer? Car safe to drive?
