Agreed. Best case scenario is it is simply excessive moisture burning off. My Passat wagon does that but not consistently.

Or it could be the beginning of a head gasket leak. The red block engines are known for that at high mileage. I was lucky with my 90 240. Drove it over 300k without doing a head gasket or any engine work for that matter....:)
