This is about my 94 940 L-block (oil squirter) B230FT rebuild.
I pulled the engine out of my wrecked 740T (RIP Frank the Tank), and when I did, I found that #3 cylinder had a whopping 60psi of compression (the others all read over 120 after the engine had sat for a couple months).
So, I found the head gasket had basically crumbled to the point that gas was able to go over the top of the fire ring and right into the oil galley next to it.
I pulled the manifolds off today, and removed the cam, the shims, and all sensors.
I've never taken an engine in for rebuild before, and I don't know that much about it. What kind of pitfalls are there, other than outright incompetence?
I talked to one rebuilder that said "Oh, yeah, it'll be about $600 to rebuild, I'm sure it will need new valves, new guides..." And he actually did know I was talking about a Volvo redblock. I think he was bananas.
I have new valve stem seals, but haven't really ordered anything else yet. I definitely need new rubber hushers (you should see the old ones). I'll see what the machine shop says. They said there is a vacuum test to check for leakage past the valves.
I saw maximum distortion is 0.25mm on the narrow axis and 0.5mm on the long axis for the bottom of the head. The exhaust valves are sodium filled, but aftermarket intake valves themselves are almost cheap.
I did see something weird - one of the intake valves had quite a LOT of rust in the shape of what looks like standing water, but the head would have had to be upside down. On second thought, I think that is probably what happened.
I also noticed that the exhaust manifold has additional cracking beyond what is normal for a 90+ manifold. I don't know if it will be a problem, or if it's just character.
