A 940 wagon coolant leak eludes me 900 1995

Hi all!

Just finished a top-end rebuild of the B230F non-turbo in my 1995 940 wagon. Replaced head gasket and nearly everything above it, including valves. Had both manifolds off to service them a bit, too. Timing belt and related components serviced, all belts replaced. No surprises getting it all back together, other than my usual surprise at how unbelievably annoying the pcv system is. But still.

Started it up today and everything turns and burns the way it should. The engine is so much quieter with new valve hushers.

But--TERROR.

Even before starting, I noticed a small coolant drip more toward the passenger side of the engine. A small puddle accumulated on the ground about a foot behind the firewall. I figured it was merely some run-off from a spill while I was refilling the system.

Once it was running, the leak was visibly worse. Not a stream, but steady fast dripping. I can't find anything leaking in the hoses or expansion tank. I also suspected the two pesky copper connectors, one on each side of the engine block, near the bottom of the head. Both are tight and neither seems to be leaking.

I can't find an obvious culprit yet, and so I plea to the collective wisdom of this incredibly helpful group: does the head gasket seem the likely source? Or are there other things to check that I haven't mentioned here?

The head surface did not seem warped or gouged when I replaced the gasket. I made sure the mating surfaces were squeaky clean before mounting. I also tightened the (new) head bolts to the recommended torque; I did it in two stages, however, forgetting that there are actually three (20, 44, +added degrees of torque i can't remember at the moment).

The wagon had been sitting for about a year with the head off, but it was covered. I thought I'd throw that detail in just in case something could have worked itself wonky in the time it sat.

Thank you in advance for any assistance at all you can render!
