'61 hood hinge question 444-544

I am finally getting around to putting the 61 544 back together. I noticed that the pivot points for the bonnet hinges consist of a 3/8" bolt through two large thick washers on either side of a hole in the nose piece. The hole in the nose piece is over an inch in diameter....leading to a rather weird fit in which the bolt can wander all over the place. Is this normal or was the hole originally smaller and mine is now worn/wallowed out? It has been several years since i took this beast apart so dont recall how well the hinges closed. It would seem that this would be a good place to install a flange mounted bearing but it would be good to know if anyone has tried this approach. Might be overkill. Any advice appreciated.
Thanks
dean
