Cleaning oxidised aluminium?

I'm just dismantling and storing a B230F red block. Mostly in good condition after years of work. The external surfaces are oxidised (the head) and a bit rusty (the block).
Has anyone got any recommendations for cleaning up the external aluminium of the cylinder head? It's a bit powdery and crusty, and it would be good to clean it up a bit before storage.
