They are very different beasts.

In short, your 960 has the 3.0 liter "whiteblock" engine. The newer engines from the S60 and others are either a 3.2 liter normally aspirated or 3.0 liter turbo and are of a comepletely different design.

The new engines, instead of running all the accessories off the front, they have what Mother Volvo called the rear accessory drive (READ) system. It's a gear driven arrangement for the alternator, PS and AC compressor. This was done to shorten the length of the engine's footprint to better fit into FWD engine bays.
