Volvo Problem Solver 200 1984

Well that just made for a side trip down memory lane.

In the days before brickboard, TB and even the Usenet alt.autos.volvo group, the Volvo Problem Solver by Robert Gernhardt & Assoc. was indeed a superior resource for quirky problems. A sort of 700/900 FAQ, but for early 240 owners, it's a 3-ring binder with the Advanced Edition being over 200 pages. For my 140 and the early days of 240 ownership it was my main troubleshooting guide alongside my trusty Haynes manuals for basic reference. Anything I couldn't figure out from those got referred to my highly competent Volvo indie -perish the thought I might ever need to take my bricks to dealer service (can probably count the times on one hand). I was too cheap to better equip myself with the Bentley Bible for 240 Owners, Bentley's Bosch Fuel Injection manual and the much revered Gothenburg Bible by Paul Grimshaw. Many of my fellow oldtimers I'm sure still have and cherish those.

I still have my Problem Solver hard copy within arms reach, but rarely crack it open these days unless I'm trying to refresh my memory on some old D-Jet, K-Jet or LH 2.0/2.2 issue I remember it covering. I just pulled it out and the plastic page covers are now sticking together. My copy was $69.95 from ipd back in the days when they sent out informative bi-monthly newsletters to their regular customers in addition to their glossy, 100+ page, semi-annual master catalogs. I always looked forward to those, still even have a collection I just found buried behind my Problem Solver. Somewhere I even have the Problem Solver video cassette that you could order with it. I think I watched it an entire once.

There were a number of update pages from Reinhardt free to registered owners. The copy on Ozvolvo.org/archives is missing the final few updates that covered a select few early 700 problems. For those who may trip over a copy, the final update I have ends with Group 100 (|107|) 700 TURBO 'WHOOOOSH' AIR RUSHING NOISE ... POOR ACCELERATION caused by loose retaining nuts on the bypass valve.
