'84 240 GL Speedometer is being moody 200

Hey lads,

At first, I thought my speedometer cable broke, as I looked down while driving one day and saw that the speedo had failed. But to the best of my understanding, the speedo cable runs both the speedo and odometer gauges... and the odometer is working fine. The speedo now won't work for roughly half the time. Some days it works, other days it doesn't. Sometimes the needle is stable, other times it jumps everywhere, others only at 20-30mph. I can't seem to find resources that mention both needle failure and the odometer continuing to work.

Is this still a cable issue, or is the nylon gear in the gauge cluster starting to slip/go? I'm not precisely going to go fast enough to get in trouble with the law, and I can see my speed on my phone, but I'd really like to get this sorted as it becomes my daily driver.

And if I do wind up getting a new (to me) gauge cluster... is there a way to roll the odometer forwards/backwards to match my current reading?

Cheers
