windshield washer spray spigot install? 1800

I am trying to replace a missing windshield spray nozzle on my 70 1800E. The issue is trying to install the securing nut/fixture to the spray nozzle from below the double panel through a lower 1" access hole. The threaded nozzle extension is too short to provide a start below the lower panel to thread the securing nut, so I keep dropping it. Once you drop the nut it can float unretrievable in the cavity! I was lucky the first time it happened, as I was able to fish out the nut after 30 minutes with a piece of hooked wire. I assume it shouldn't be that difficult if you know the secret procedure. It is not in a manual. Any tips?
