Axel hub pull lessons learned (re-learned) 444-544

What worked and what did not.

Worked
I do not have an OEM type puller. Built my own using a 1” grade 8 bolt and nut with 14 threads per inch.
Used a tap & die set to chase the stud and nut threads
Installed the large axel nut with the crown facing inward to keep axel from spreading when being pushed on.
Mounted the puller using lug nuts with the flat sides against the puller
Used an air impact driver (mine is supposed to be 400 ft-lbs) with a 1 ½”, ¾ drive socket, air at ~ 100 PSI
Both axel hubs came off easily with the rattler.

Did not Work
Home built puller with 1” bolt coarse thread, 8 thread per inch with a T-handle.
Mounted puller as above and used a hammer to tighten the puller. No results
Used the BFH hammer 10 lbs. Hub still stuck, but concerned about destroying axel.
Heated hub and attempted a pull again using the hammer. Damaged stud and nut threads. One stud broke off during nut removal. Was able to clean up damaged threads and tapped the broken stud.
Should have let axel cool down before attempting a pull again.
Attempted tightening the puller with an extension pipe on the T-handle but the differential started turning. Drive shaft not connected as I’m in the process of vehicle disassembly.
After building fine thread puller and using an air impact gun, both sides came off easily.
