1988 Volvo 740 speedometer needle bouncing .

Speedometer needle is bouncing . Checked the sending unit on the rear axle and electrical taped the wires to the plug since I found deteriorated insulation missing on the wire. The wire were not touching. I was wondering if the sensor pick-up are know n to fail and if there is a Ohms test on the pick-up unit. I did notice on left hand turn the speedometer needle corrects itself so that leads me to think its the wiring. Are there any plugs on the back of the speedometer that come loose? Thanks All !😲
