1991 240 speedo needle drops to 0 but, jumps back up when dash tapped on 200

Hello,
My 1991 240 has a new-er issue with the speedo. While driving along, the speedo needle will suddelny drop to but, a hit on the dash will get it to pop back up again, usually. It usually takes a few hits. I want to keep track of my miles (of course) so, I need to get it fixed. I took the instruement cluster out and didn't find anything out of the ordinary on the back of the cluster. Any clues would be appreciated. Thanks.
