M46 White Block to Red Block 200 1981

In Volvo circles "white block" refers to 4, 5, and 6 cylinder all aluminum engines found in the newer cars starting with the 960 (6cyl), then 850/S70/V70 (5cyl), S/V40 (4cyl), and so on.

Bolting pattern is different than the red-block; no bellhousing exists to mate an M46 to a white block. White block cars are all either front wheel drive or (in the US market) automatics. The rare and elusive M90 manual transmission was put into late red block cars and the white block 960 but was never offered in the US market.
