Dead fuel pump & questions 200

So I searched around and didn't really find the answers I was looking for..

My 88 245 has been sitting for a little over two years. I've gone through most procedures for a not starting situation. And most of the ignition bits have been replaced with new. And I'm definitely having fueling issues.

I bypassed the pump relay via jumping 4&6 fuses. And not a peep from my pumps. I supplied voltage directly to the main pump. The pump is pulling 9 amps ( read with my clamp on ammeter).

I purchased this car in 2006 and both pumps very well may be original.

My questions: can the in-tank pump fail and the main pump keep the car running?

Do these pumps fail in this manner? I'd expect to hear a little noise when the pump is pulling 9amps..

Regarding replacement pumps: Is Bosch still a proper replacement for the main?
Is any hookie pookie in-tank pump acceptable?

Thank you for any help, the good folks at Brickboard!
