The special Volvo tool for removing a stuck axle is a slide hammer with the correct threads for the axle.

Before we had that tool, we used 1 of the drums as a slide hammer.

Remove the axle key and put the drum on the axle loosely and then screw on the axle nut as a stop trying to get at least 3 full turns of the nut and then pull quickly on the drum towards the axle nut as many times as necessary.
