wagon rear seat won't fold 700 1988

I seem to be caught in a catch 22 with this issue.

i think something is broken or come apart inside the back of the rear seat. it is made in two sections and I can fold the narrow one.

the wider one has a latch behind and it does have tension if I pull it but it can't release. since I bought the car Ive never been able to open it to fold the back of the seat down flat.

I tried to figure out how to get the back seat out to get under the upholstery, and maybe i can see other parts but it seems that in order to remove the back seat I need to fold the back down to access the bolts that hold it and it won't unlatch. thus it's a catch 22..

there is sort of a spring loaded cover ( covered in carpet) behind the rear seat back that should fold to close the gap when its folded down flat and i tried taking that apart but it didn't seem to get me further. I wondered if other owners have been stuck with this issue. It has a latch near the pivot that should release but I can't seem to budge it. I tried pryin gthe actual latch with screwdrives and things to no avail. I can fold down the narrow portion not the wider side. other than using dynamite or taking a box cutter tot he upholstery I'm stumped. This of course doesn't prevent me using the car, its just a little thing I've been bit stuck on, for about 15 years..

Maybe I just need to only go out with very skinny ladies in case we ever want to lie down back there?;-)

I've had a few times where I wanted to put something large in there and it will not fold.

has anyone else been stuck in this scenario?
