O2 sensors - interchangeable ? 200

Excellent Bosch product brochure link, Chuck -I missed that. It appears that old wives tale is correct, but apparently Bosch is the only O2 sensor manufacturer that does this. I still find it difficult to believe sufficient oxygen can be drawn/absorbed down the copper stranded connector wires to be used as an atmospheric reference, but apparently that's the case. Perhaps some is absorbed through the insulation. With the full OEM cable that means the Volvo TSB was correct and the connector on the firewall should not be packed with electrical paste or grease. For the universal O2 sensor with the pigtails, that means the pig tails must not be soldered. The pig tail is supposed to be well weather proofed, so again the connector on the firewall should be left uncoated. The special Bosch connector that's supposed to come in the universal kit should be used for full weatherproofing. Common crimp connectors will only work adequately if the copper braid isn't fully crushed. I'm thinking a crimp sleeve connector may work best, but you'd want to perhaps use the next larger size and fold the ends back to get lots of exposes braid, plus when folded the wires don't pull out as easily.

There's more info on the Bosch site about the different kinds of sensors. The Volvo-style thimble Premium sensor is the older style (pre-1998) used by many auto manufacturers. The slitted thimble is an air chamber with a zirconium or titanium ceramic sensor inside. The square nose Universal style with the holes in the end is the newer sensor with a more responsive zirconium or titanium sensor right behind the holes. It's described here in their master catalog

(note that this is a slightly older catalog as the Volvo fitment listed at the end is for the older 13034 sensor, not the current 13308 sensor)
