clutch cable life 200 89

Two questions for the experts...

How long can I expect the clutch cable to last? It broke a few years back with no warning at ~125,000 mi. Now I'm just over 200,000 mi. Apart from a smear of white grease is there any preventative maintenance?

I have seen postings refer to a rubber block at the transmission end of the cable. I have no such thing, just a swaged ball bearing directly on the steel arm. Am I missing something? The clutch action seems just fine.

As always, the advice is great, thanks.
