fuel pump 700 1990

My 90 740 wagon would not restart after running fine. I had it towed to a deaaler who diagnosed the problem as the in-tank fuel pump. He gave me a quote of $700.00 to repair it, $500 parts, $200 labor. Is it true that if I were to fill the tank, the main pump would pull from the tank? If so, how long can I safely drive it? I'd like to get the car home without having it towed again, or at least to an independent garage who quoted me $236.00 to replace the pump.

Thanks,

Joe
