I had the same issue and ended up resoldering the am tuner board connections which is mounted perpendicular to the main board on the bottom. Remove the radio and expose the electronics, wiggle the board and see if you can get the AM to come in. Once you've localized the area, start soldering. Even after fixing that I still have crappy AM, usually faint with static and interesting theremin sounds.
