940 Turbo trans grinding noise, car stops. 900 1993

This is the second time I have heard an increasing whine and grind coming from the transmission. As I accelerate, is gets louder and higher. The dealer took it apart and said he found metal shavings and something about a bolt shearing off. A few years later it happens again, this time I was driving at about 80Mph and the noise started, I then heard a crunch and the engine turns off!!! I was crappin' my shorts. No pw steering or brakes, I ease it off and try an restart the car. Nothing. I shift into N and finally get the engine to turn over. The noise is much less, but I think I did some damage. It has since been fixed but I never got a clear explination.

Anyone else had such an experience?
