Starter - no action - help!! 200 1987

Just picked up a 1987 245 to replace our 1986 245 (Ole Blue) that was totalled in a vehicle collision last week.

ONE PROBLEM

The starter on the 87 will not function -

Turn the key - dash idiot lights come on, no clicking, no solenoid engaged or clicking.

We push started the car when we bought it - it catches and runs very well.

I drove it home, 100 miles, at night - plenty of alternator output for heater, lights, etc.

(The prior owner said the starter was kaput - so this morning I R&R'd the starter for one I know is working. I think I wasted the morning instead of doing a thorough diagnostic on it.)

Turn the key - nothing.

I checked the flat fuse (25A) on the left inner fender - it is OK.

Battery posts are clean and the battery is strong.

I attempted to use the ignition bypass clip located on the center of the firewall - nothing.

One question - in addition to the red 12V cable - my 1980 B21A had two wires to the end of the solenoid - a blue/yellow spade connector on the left, and a brown spade connector on the right of the main 12V red lug.

The 1987 (B230F) only had the blue/yellow spade connector - a Volvo repair shop said the brown wire was for something else - what??

- Any ideas or experiences that may help are appreciated.

Thanks in Advance

Gord Hull
